The region Madre de Dios is formed mainly by three alluvial plains and up to four levels of terraces. The lowest of which are flooded annually and are generally marshy. The south is dominated by the abutments of the Mountain range of Carabaya. To the west of the region, the east of the Manu river lie hills of little elevation between which is the Isthmus of Fitzcarrald, that forms the division of waters to become the rivers of the Madre de Dios and Urubamba.
