About Cuzco - Imperial Capital of the Incas
Cusco, the old Imperial Capital of the Incas, according to the legend, was founded by the Inca Manco Capac and his wife Mama Ocllo (who was also his sister).
They emerged from Lake Titicaca and built an empire from Colombia to Chile. They were conquered by the Spanish in 1532 but the architecture and cultural heritage lives on today, making the area rich in sites and history for tourists and locals alike. Spanish School in Cusco
The city, in the heart of the Andes is 3400 metres above sea level. The variety of culture and religion has generated a new Peruvian society heavy with diversity.
General Information about Cusco
  • Landscape: mountainous regions and jungle.
  • Population: 350.000 aprox.
  • Climate: Varied and dry with two main seasons.
The wet season is from November to March and the dry season from April to October. However during September and October until the begining of November it is possible for the temperature to rise to as much as 20 degrees.
Due Cusco's position in the mountains the weather and temperature are prone to dramatic changes. At night the temperature can fall as low as 0 degrees while rising to 20 degrees or more during day time. Hence it is recomended that students bring both winter and summer clothes. Learn Spanish Cusco
Due to the altitude of Cusco students may suffer from mild 'soroche' (altitude sickness). For the first day much rest is recommended but the effect should disappear soon after.
Due to its central location, Cusco is ideal for a travel base as Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brasil all border Perú.
